Dominic's Story
Dominic had always been a doer. He was a good son, a good husband a good father. Economic times had really taken a toll on him. First he lost his job, and now his family was about to lose their home. He sold his tools, most of the family treasures, even his children’s bikes. He could not think of anything more to do.
In desperation, Dominic drove his old Chevy pickup up to the ridge at Pine Lookout. He told his wife that he was going to go see if he could catch a fish or a rabbit or something for food. As he sat at the rim, with tears in his eyes he thought all I have to do is hit the accelerator and it will be all over. I’ll just go over this cliff. It will look like an accident and my wife can collect on the accidental death benefit we have on our last credit card.
Just then Dominic heard a soft mewling sound. What was that? Where was it coming from? It persisted. He turned off the engine and listened. There it was again. He stepped out of the truck just in time to see a tiny fawn, with wobbly legs headed for the cliff edge.
With scarcely a second thought, Dominic bolted across the ground and grabbed the frightened little creature by it’s back leg just as it reached the edge. Dominic quickly wrapped his jacket around the fawn and held it tightly. He looked around wondering where the doe was. He decided to walk in the direction from which he believed the fawn had come.
After a brief walk he saw her. She had been killed by a poacher and had ran back to her fawn to die. The poor little thing was an orphan. With no other thoughts in his head, Dominic placed the little jacket wrapped fawn on the passenger side of his truck and headed down the mountain.
There was a Ranger Station at the base he had passed on his way here. Fortunately, a Ranger was still there. He told him the story of finding it’s dead mother. The Ranger called the local Wild Animal Sanctuary and they said to warm some water with a tiny bit of sugar and offer it to her with a spoon until they could get there to pick her up. They responded quickly with a nice warm bottle and formula.
The Ranger was so impressed by Dominic he said they were looking to hire and would he be interested in a job in Wildlife management.
Side note: Dominic got to name the fawn. He chose the name Angel because he honestly believed she was sent by God to save his life. He and his family still visit her at the sanctuary.
Moral#1 Keep the faith, the night is always darkest just before the dawn.
Moral #2 Trust that there is a greater plan at work that must unfold in it's own time and place.
Moral #3 If you really want to be heard, you must walk the walk, not just talk the talk.
